Gearing Up for Our Fourth Camping Trip (and a Sneak Peek at the Fifth!)

We’re getting ready for our fourth camping trip of the year—and we already have our fifth one planned! I’m especially excited about that fifth trip… more on that later in this post.

We’ve been doing a lot of camping this year, which was one of our goals after last season ended. I’m really happy we’re making it happen. So far, Oliver has joined us on two out of the three trips, and we’re planning to have him with us on the next two as well.

Our fifth trip will be a special one—it’ll be our first time camping with a travel trailer! We had our Honda Pilot equipped with a hitch and wiring harness about a week ago. We’ve already reserved a site and an RV, and now we’re working on getting everything else ready for towing.

One thing we learned is that we need a brake controller installed. Apparently, brake controllers come standard on most trucks, but this was new to me. Back when I used to drive my dad’s truck with a boat attached, I never heard of a brake controller.

After doing some research and talking to a few colleagues, I found out that a brake controller allows the trailer’s brakes to activate when the vehicle’s brakes are applied. It’s a safety feature that wasn’t available—or at least not common—back when I was towing with my dad’s truck.

Right now, I’m trying to get the brake controller installation scheduled so we’ll be ready for our July trip with the RV trailer.

I had budgeted for the hitch and harness, knowing they’d be a big expense, but I hadn’t factored in the cost of the brake controller. One local company gave me an estimate, and it’s definitely another significant cost. Still, I think it’ll be worth it to ensure we’re fully equipped, no matter what kind of trailer we’re hauling.

On a positive note, we’ll be making our final payment on the Honda Pilot in July—no more car payments for a while, hopefully! We’re considering getting a used car to replace the Accord at some point, but there are no immediate plans for that.

We’re really excited to start our RV camping adventures and are hopeful we can get the Pilot ready in time—without breaking the bank.

Until next time, have a great rest of your Sunday and an awesome week ahead!

The Workout Starts Now and I Plan to Stick to a Regular Schedule for Exercise

I previously stated that I would start up exercise again after our latest camping trip (see No Exercise), so the time has come to start my journey to become motivated and start a workout process once again. The last time I worked out was November to the end of June. I completely stopped riding our bike, walking, or basically doing anything, so now the motivation needs to kick in so I can start working out on a regular basis.

My plan is simple, start out slow. Bike riding 10 - 15 minutes the first few weeks as I build up what I lost in stamina from riding November 2020 - June 2021. I know that when I rode for only a week back in August, I struggled to ride for the two or three days I had planned which ultimately had me giving up and not riding since that date. My plan this time is to only do 10 - 15 minutes in beginning classes once again 2 to 3 times per week.

I would also like to add in walking/jogging at least once a week although that might be difficult as the winter months are approaching, but we will see. The walking/jogging is to give me motivation to take our dog, Oliver, on walks. He loves it when I used to jog regularly (see Jogging Posts) as he would get excited when I would simply put on my tennis shoes. If I can just start the regular bike riding, I will be happy and keep it going throughout the year even when busy with other items.

To be able to keep the bike riding motivation continuing, I plan to ride during the week before work. My plan is to get up at 6 am on Tuesday and Thursday to ride the bike. As I become more used to riding, I might need to extend this out to earlier, but right now, I plan on 6 am twice a week to get up and ride. The third day of riding will be on either Saturday or Sunday depending on what is happening. I prefer Sunday and hope to take part in "Sundays with Love" on Peloton.

Peloton Stats from Havertyj
Looking at my current stats from Peloton, I did 275 activities with most of them being riding the bike, but I hope in a year I can double that amount. I did really good for a few months and then it is so easy to just stop and very difficult to get back into the swing of exercise.

I plan to update here at least once a month on my status and looking for my family and friends to call me out if I miss a monthly update or you know I am not doing the rides. I do enjoy riding, and running, so I look forward to the process and getting back into the swing of the mindset for exercise.

What do you do for exercise and how do you keep yourself motivated to keep working out each week? Post a comment and I would like to discuss further.

Camping Discussion for September and October plus Future Camping and Taking Our Dog in Cooler Temperatures

Carrie and I have not been camping in a few months, so we are thinking about going here soon before it gets cold. We are debating on whether to go camping for our anniversary or wait until October. We are looking at options and trying to figure out when we could do a long weekend for another camping adventure.

We learned this week that the annual festival I attend each year, King Biscuit Blues Festival, has been canceled for the second time in a row. Sad to hear we will not be at the festival this year and not able to see our friends that travel from all over the country to attend. Although it makes sense with the rise of COVID cases across the country, it is sad to not be going again this year. So, instead of going to a blues festival, Carrie and I might take a long weekend and go camping instead. Although no dates are set and we do not have anything reserved at this time.

If possible, we would love to be able to do two or three more camping trips before it gets cold. I am not sure how that will work out though. As we see August come to an end, we move into September and if the first few weeks of September are anything like the last few weeks of August, it would be very warm to go camping. Granted, the weather should start cooling down where it will be nice to camp, but it would be cool during the evening and just the day to deal with the heat.

Sleepy Oliver Whether at Home or Camping
We did learn from our camping adventure back in June (see Camping in Hot Temperatures at lake Milford Near Junction City) that we can go camping in extreme temperatures, but it would be nice to be able to take our dog and not have him overheat in the weather. So, hopefully late September we can get a camping visit done and then two more in October.

I am not sure how much Oliver likes to camp as we have only taken him two times so far in our adventures, but he seems to like the experience. He sleeps throughout the day, enjoys going on walks as we do much more walking when we are camping than at home, and he likes watching the people at the other camp sites. The weather might be too warm to take him in September, but hopefully we can take him at least once in October if we can get a date set.

We did book a camp site for the future (2022) in Big Bend National Park and we cannot wait for that trip. The dates are tentatively set as Carrie could see the dates disappearing, but we do have that to look forward to in 2022.

What trips do you have planned for future camping sites? Do you have a favorite you would recommend that Carrie and I visit? We would love to hear from you in the comments. Until next week, have a great week!
