First Snow of 2024: A Lazy Saturday and a Promise to Ride

First Snow of 2024
First Snow of 2024

Snow had been in the forecast for a week or so leading up to Thanksgiving. It disappeared and would reappear a few times, but it did finally happen today on November 30. I was remembering a year ago we had our first snow on this day too as Carrie and I went to a Washburn basketball game when it was snowing after Thanksgiving break. There was a game today, but Carrie and I were both tired, so we decided to stay home today. A pretty snow although I have not heard how much snow we had.

The Saturday following two Thanksgiving celebrations is a lazy Saturday for us. We have dishes to do, but I have taken a few naps throughout the afternoon. Watched the Jayhawks lose their last game of the season in football to Baylor with Baylor being too much for us after knocking off three ranked teams in a row, we stumbled with Baylor.

Oliver Sleeping and Staying Warm on a Snowy Day
Sleepy Oliver

Oliver is enjoying the lazy day as he relaxes on the couch in a pile of blankets where he is sleeping and staying warm. I think we had his heated blanket on too that he is using through the day. Yes, he's quite spoiled, but we adore him.

Not a lot planned for tonight. I had leftovers for lunch and will have leftovers for dinner too. They are so good! I love Thanksgiving leftovers. We have homemade pies to eat tonight which include sweet potato pie and dixie pie.

Yes, you guessed right that tomorrow I plan to start riding my bike again. I have been away from bike riding, or exercise, for a few months, but I plan to get back on the bike tomorrow and start the journey. That's what always happens following Thanksgiving where new gym memberships are started and people make decisions to start working out again. That is me this time too and hoping to stick with bike riding two or three times a week. I am feeling excited to start riding again, so that will help to keep me motivated to do so.

Until next week, have a great week and stay warm.

Happy Thanksgiving! Have a Great Thanksgiving 2024!

Charlie Brown Quote About Thanksgiving

Have a safe and happy holiday weekend. I may have mentioned this before, but Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year. I love the food, a little too much, and I love spending time with family and friends.

A friend shared the classic Charlie Brown quote earlier this week: "What if today, we were just grateful for everything?" It's so fitting for Thanksgiving, and I thought it would be a great way to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.

I know I'll be enjoying turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, and, of course, pie. What are some of your favorite Thanksgiving dishes? Or do you have a different family tradition?

However you choose to celebrate, I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and get to spend time with loved ones.

First Day Jitters, Second Day Snuggles: Oliver's Dog Hotel Story

Oliver's First Day at Dog Hotel
Oliver's First Day at Dog Hotel
Last weekend, Carrie and I went to Des Moines, Iowa (see post) for the weekend and we decided to try out a new place to have Oliver stay while we were away on our trip. We are lucky to have family that is willing and able to watch Oliver when we cannot take him with us on trips. Joan and Eddie have watched him numerous times, my mom in Lawrence has watched him for extended periods, and we have tapped our friend Brenda to watch him at times too. We had been wanting to try a spot in Topeka in case of emergency or no one is available, so this was the weekend to give it a try.

We selected TLC Pet Nursing Hotel that Carrie and I had checked out about a year ago and did a tour of the facility. We liked what we saw through the walk through and wanted to give it a try with a short trip. We dropped Oliver off around 7 am on Friday, November 15. Gave directions for feeding, what he needed through the day, and confirmed contact information.

Oliver had a nice set up at the dog hotel with his own room, bed, and we could leave things from home with him such as his own bed, blanket, and toys. The staff would walk him a few times throughout the day and then he had a cuddle/play day too on Saturday I believe. For an extra $3 a day, we could have pictures of him shared with us which of course we paid to have available. Overall, it was rather expensive to have him stay at dog hotel and get the pictures, but worth it to know we have it as an option if the need arises.

His first day at the dog hotel and he looked nervous in the pictures that were shared which consist of the first two pictures provided thus far. He does not look content and still wondering what is happening. By the second day, he looked a little more at home in the pictures that were shared. He still looked to be wondering what was happening, but a little more receptive to those taking care of him and ready to snuggle in for a night of sleep.

Oliver went on walks a few times a day and it showed when we picked him up on Sunday mid-afternoon, he slept the rest of the afternoon and into the evening. I think we all went to bed early that night and he was so ready to head to bed, he ran up to the bed and was sleep by 9.

Overall, I think it was a good experience for Oliver. They took good care of him at TLC Pet Nursing Hotel. We will keep them in mind for the future, but hoping we can continue to use family and friends to watch our little guy. We so appreciate having Oliver watched by our family/friends and keeping us updated on how he is doing while we are gone.

2024 Reading Challenge: Is It Too Late to Lower My Goal?

GoodReads Book Challenge Status 2024
GoodReads Book Challenge Status 2024

Every year for the past few years, I've participated in the GoodReads reading challenge. This year is no different, but I'm struggling to keep up with my reading goal. I've read every day, but sometimes it's only a page or two. I initially set a goal of 25 books for 2024, but I'm only at 11 books with November almost over. It doesn't look promising that I'll finish 25 books by the end of December.

Last year, I was at 17 out of 25 books in early November and ultimately completed my 25-book challenge for 2023 (see post). I finished 2023 by listening to many audiobooks and reading shorter books. I'm not sure if I'll have enough time to catch up on my reading for 2024, especially being at only 11 out of 25 books.

I've enjoyed some great books this year. I recently finished "Goodbye, Butterfly: Murder, Faith and Forgiveness in a Small Kansas Town," which I found captivating. This book was written by my friend Ernie Webb III from Washburn University. It was Ernie's first book, and I think he did an excellent job. The book kept me engaged and interested until the end.

My plan is to find a few audiobooks to listen to and tackle a few more books from my target list. However, I don't think I can fit in 14 books between now and December 31st. We'll see, though, and I'll enjoy the process.

I hope you are enjoying a challenge of your own whether it be reading, exercise, or exploring the great outdoors.

Capitol City Charm: A Des Moines Weekend

Trip to Des Moines, Iowa
Trip to Des Moines, Iowa

We left for Des Moines, Iowa on Friday morning. We dropped Oliver off where he would stay through Sunday and we were on the road by 7:30. We drove to Des Moines with Erin and Greg and then met up with Laura and Jason where we had lunch and stayed at a Airbnb. We had a great time! We toured the capitol, went to antique place, did a lot of walking, and then we ate and drank a few different places. So much fun! Carrie and I were so tired when we got back home that we both took long naps Sunday afternoon into the evening and likely going to bed early this evening.

We met Laura and Jason at El Bait Shop and then we headed to the capitol to look around. Carrie and I had been there before (back in 2016), but we wanted to show the others the beautiful capitol in Iowa. The clear blue skies made the capitol stand out against the dark blue background. It was fun going through and seeing the different areas of the capitol. We toured all the floors we could access which was cool. We decided doing a guided tour and looked around on our own which is what Carrie and I did back in 2016 when we toured their capitol.

We finished the weekend Saturday night at a speak easy. A few of us had a wild night on Friday, so it was low key on Saturday night. The drinks were good and we had a good time hanging out together. We are already looking forward to our next trip back to Des Moines, Iowa and talked about going earlier in the season. We lucked out with the weather for our trip as it was sunny while we were there. A random rain shower moved through on Saturday late afternoon, but that was about it.

Great time and Des Moines was good to us once again. I look forward to going back in the future.

The 2024 Election: A Night of Dread and Uncertainty

Watching the Returns on Election Night
Election Night and Wine

With many months of buildup of texts, emails, commercials, and rallies, the 2024 election is finally over. Oddly enough, almost a week later, I'm still receiving texts and email messages asking for money. Okay, time to stop with the texts and emails. Carrie and I spent election night flipping between Fox, CNN, CNBC, BBC, and PBS to watch the various reports. I think my favorite channel to watch for election night was the BBC.

I stayed up late watching the returns, but by 9 or 10 PM, it was clear what was happening. I went to bed around 11 or 11:30 PM and then woke up around 3 AM as I couldn't sleep. I checked the news and found that Trump had won.

The wine was good, but the night of the returns, not so much. If it's not clear, I voted for Harris and did not want another four years of Trump. I thought Trump was a disaster in his first term, and I think the next four years are going to be worse. Trump made a lot of promises over the past few months leading up to the election, and if he carries out even one or two of those promises (e.g., deporting undocumented migrants, changes in the economy with taxes and tariffs on imports, etc.), we will be in a very different America in four years.

I'm frightened by the names of people Trump has said will be part of his cabinet. Elon Musk and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are at the top of the list. From everything I've read and watched of RFK Jr., he sounds like a nut job. Yet, Trump said in various rallies that RFK Jr. will lead the Department of Health and Human Services. This seems like an odd choice and not something to "Make America Great Again." Elon Musk and RFK Jr. are interesting selections from Trump, so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Carrie asked me what I wanted written on my glass for election night, and I told her "nervous." I remain nervous about where our country will be over the next four years. I think it's going to be a bumpy four years with Trump as President. Time will tell, and history will tell the story long after his presidency is over, but that's my feeling as we head into the second term of a Trump presidency.

Battling the Elements: A Rainy Homecoming Adventure

Rainy but we have a tent
Rainy but we have a tent

Saturday was Homecoming at Washburn University. The forecast for the day was rain all day long. That did not stop Carrie and I from going out to tailgate and watch some football. Carrie was a judge in the parade, so we had to get her out there at 9:45 to get instructions on judging. Yes, it rained the whole day and at times it poured so hard it was difficult to see the scoreboard or south end of the end zone. We persevered through the rain and stayed almost to the end.

There were three weather delays because of lightning strikes. We made it through the first two weather delays. However, the third delay occurred with about one minute and forty-five seconds left in the game, with the Ichabods facing a third down and trailing 14-13. When the third weather delay occurred, we decided to head home and listen on the radio. We got everything packed up and we were almost home when we listened to the end of the game.

While it rained the whole day, I did not get cold until about the fourth quarter. My feet started to get a little cold after standing in puddles and mud in our corner.  We had to try and keep Carrie warm, so we gathered all the blankets and put them on her for the second half. She is a trooper going out to games with me this year. We had a blast tailgating and cheering on the Ichabods and I think Carrie enjoyed a parade for the first time in her life. She has never been a big fan of parades, but I think she liked judging and being actively participating in the process.

There was a good turnout for the parade even with the rain. The kids that did show up had all the candy they could collect. As we were leaving the game at the end of the day, I could see candy that had been thrown out during the parade on the ground, so it had not all been collected. It had been a while since Washburn had done a Homecoming parade. It was fun with around 95 entries and there was a good crowd around along the route. It was good to see and fun to see others out for the parade.

This will be out last game of the season. We will miss the game on November 9, so we said our good-byes until next season to Jonny who has been our tailgate neighbor for as long as I can remember. We told him there might be others in our spot for next week, but we would miss it.

A frustrating season for sure for the Ichabods, but we had a great time tailgating and cheering on the Ichabods all season. We even made it to another stadium to watch them this year. We are ready for basketball season to start.

Until next time, have a great week!
